About Me

My name is Griselda Resendiz and I am a graduate student at the University of San Diego. I am currently working on my masters in Education and my single subject credential in Mathematics. I obtained my bachelors degree in mathematics with a secondary education emphasis and minored in ethnic studies. Although many people may not usually think to combine these two distinct fields, I felt they complimented each other quite well. While I learned about the content I wanted to teach, I also learned about the cultures and history of the students I would eventually teach.

My passion for teaching and becoming a high school math teacher comes from personal experience. Through out my academic career I have been fortunate to have counselors and teachers that take me more than a students and not just a name on their roster. They show their concern for my well being in and out of school by getting to me. Like them, I hope to motivate students. Being a first generation student, my teachers and older sister where the only people who were able to help me academically. My parents only have a first grade education, thus they were only able to give me moral support throughout my educaiton. I know kids need more than a teacher; they need moral support from someone that knows what it feels like to have nothing but a dream to fulfill and a goal to achieve.

In addition to my studies at USD i enjoy doing volunteer work. In particular, I like to go into the learning center at the apartment complex of Community Housing Works, a non-profit organization. Here I spend time with children ages 5-18 doing all sorts of activities. From tutoring to doing fundraising activities, I get to learn how to work with children I may find in my classroom. It is such a rewarding experience and it only reinforces my aspirations of becoming a teacher.
